Install & requirements

WhatNeeded
macOS15 (Sequoia) or later
MacApple Silicon (M1 or later). Intel Macs are not supported
Diskabout 2 GB for the app and the first OS image, plus the disks of your VMs
Memoryevery VM reserves its memory while it runs; a small cluster needs several GB
Networkfor the first start (OS image download) and the licence check; the lab itself works offline

No Docker, no Homebrew and no other runtime are needed. The VMs run on Apple’s Virtualization framework.

  1. Download the disk image from the Download page and open it.
  2. Drag the app into the Applications folder.
  3. Open it from Applications.

On the first start the app shows a short setup sheet and then creates your lab:

  • It checks that the ports it needs are free (by default 18580 and 18581 over TCP and 18582 over UDP). If another lab uses them, it picks the next free block (18680–18682, and so on).
  • It downloads the current Debian cloud image for arm64 (about 290 MB), checks it against Debian’s published checksums and keeps it for later labs. The progress is shown in the sheet.
  • It writes the lab’s configuration to ~/Library/Application Support/ownpaas/ and keeps the tokens in your login Keychain.
  • It registers the engine as a LaunchAgent, so the lab keeps running when you close the window and starts again when you log in. macOS may ask you to allow it under System Settings › General › Login Items.

When the sheet closes, the lab answers and you have a first project called default.
